What is 2048? How to Play and Win the Sliding Tile Puzzle
2048 is one of the most addictive puzzle games ever created. The rules take thirty seconds to learn but mastering it takes real strategy. Here is everything you need to know.
2048 became a global phenomenon and has remained one of the most played browser games ever since. The concept is brilliantly simple — slide numbered tiles on a grid, combine matching tiles, and work toward the legendary 2048 tile.
SlideFixx, our free 2048-style sliding tile game at DailyBrainFix, captures everything that makes the original great. Whether you are brand new to the game or looking to improve your score this guide covers everything.
How 2048 Works
The game takes place on a 4×4 grid. You start with two tiles — each showing either the number 2 or 4. On every turn you slide all tiles in one direction: up, down, left, or right. After each slide a new tile appears in a random empty spot.
When two tiles with the same number collide during a slide they merge into a single tile showing their combined value. Two 2 tiles become one 4. Two 4 tiles become one 8. The goal is to keep combining until you create a tile showing 2048.
The Corner Strategy
The single most effective strategy for reaching 2048 is the corner strategy. Choose one corner of the grid and commit to keeping your highest value tile there for the entire game.
Build a descending sequence of tiles along the bottom row leading to your corner tile. This creates a snake pattern that allows large merges to happen naturally.
Pick one corner and never let your highest tile leave it. Avoid any slide direction that would move your highest tile away from its corner. This single rule will dramatically improve your scores.
Never Slide Away From Your Corner
Once you have established your corner avoid sliding in the direction that would move your highest tile away from it. Sometimes you will be forced to make a bad slide to avoid the game ending. When this happens try to recover your corner position with your very next move.
Keep the Board Organized
Chaos is the enemy of high scores in 2048. Try to keep tiles organized in descending order from your corner outward. When small new tiles appear in inconvenient spots your priority should be merging them quickly to keep the board clean.
Think Two Moves Ahead
Before every slide consider not just what will happen immediately but what position you will be in for your next move. A slide that creates one good merge but leaves you with no good follow-up is often worse than a slide that creates no merge but leaves you in a stronger position.
Your score in SlideFixx is the sum of all merge values. Merging two 1024 tiles gives you 2048 points added to your score. More merges equals higher scores even if your highest tile stays the same.
Using Undo Wisely
SlideFixx includes an Undo button that reverses your last move. Use it when you realize immediately that a slide was a mistake — especially when it accidentally moves your highest tile out of your corner. One undo used at the right moment can save an entire game.
