The Basic Rules

Mahjong Solitaire has just two rules and they are both simple:

1. Match identical tiles to remove them. Find two tiles with the same symbol and click them both to remove the pair from the board.
2. Only free tiles can be selected. A tile is free when nothing is sitting on top of it AND it has at least one open side — either the left side or the right side must be unblocked.

That's it. The entire game is built on those two rules. The challenge comes from figuring out which matches to make in what order to avoid getting stuck.

How to Identify Free Tiles

When you first look at a Mahjong Solitaire board it can feel overwhelming. The key is learning to quickly identify which tiles are free and which are blocked.

In TileFix, free tiles appear slightly brighter and more prominent than blocked tiles. Blocked tiles appear slightly dimmed. As you play your eye will quickly learn to distinguish them without thinking about it.

A quick way to check if a tile is free — look at it from above and from the sides. If anything is resting on top of it, it is blocked. If tiles are touching both its left and right sides simultaneously, it is also blocked even if nothing is on top.

The Goal of the Game

The goal of Mahjong Solitaire is to clear all tiles from the board by matching every pair. Most standard layouts have an even number of tiles so every tile has exactly one matching partner somewhere on the board.

The game ends in one of two ways — you clear all tiles and win, or you reach a state where no more free tiles can be matched and the game is stuck. Avoiding that stuck state is what strategy is all about.

Your First Strategy — Work From the Top Down

The most important beginner strategy is to prioritize removing tiles from the top of the stack. Tiles on higher layers are blocking multiple tiles below them. Every top-layer tile you remove frees up several tiles underneath which creates more matching opportunities.

Resist the temptation to match whatever pair you spot first. Instead ask yourself — which of my available matches will uncover the most new tiles? That match is almost always the better choice.

Using the Hint Button
