Understanding the Color Clues

Every WordFix guess gives you three types of feedback through color coding:

• Green — the letter is in the word and in exactly the right position. Lock it in.
• Yellow — the letter is in the word but in the wrong position. It must go somewhere else.
• Gray — the letter is not in the word at all. Eliminate it from future guesses.

The most common mistake players make is ignoring yellow tiles. A yellow tile tells you exactly where the letter cannot go — use that information aggressively in your next guess.

The Best Starting Words

Your first guess is the most important. You want to cover as many common letters as possible to gather maximum information with minimum guesses. The best starting words cover several of the most frequent letters in the English language.

Words that work well as openers include CRANE, STARE, ADIEU, AUDIO, RAISE, and SLATE. These words collectively cover E, A, R, S, T, I, O, U, N, C, and D — the most commonly appearing letters in five-letter words.

How to Use Your Second Guess

Your second guess should accomplish two things: confirm or eliminate more letters, and respect what you already know from guess one. If guess one gave you two gray tiles and one yellow, your second word should avoid the gray letters entirely, place the yellow letter somewhere new, and introduce three fresh letters you have not tested yet.

Do not waste your second guess by repeating letters that already came back gray. Every repeated gray letter is a wasted opportunity to learn something new.

Hard Mode: A Different Challenge

WordFix includes a Hard Mode option that forces you to use every green and yellow letter in every subsequent guess. This sounds restrictive but it actually makes you a better player because it prevents you from ignoring useful information.

Think About Word Endings

When you have two or three confirmed letters and still have multiple guesses remaining, think about common word endings. English five-letter words frequently end in -TION, -IGHT, -OUND, -ATCH, -ANCE, -ENCE, and -MENT patterns. If your confirmed letters include G and H and T, an -IGHT ending is worth testing.
